What Do We Believe?

WHY JESUS?

Why Jesus? Because the bible, right from the beginning, tells us about Jesus. The New Testament is all about him, and, all through the Old Testament, we read from many scriptures about the coming of the Messiah.

Although the whole bible is about Jesus, firstly, I want to focus on the Gospel of John chapter 1, verses 1 to 18.

In John 1:1, it says, "In the beginning was the WORD, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God".

In the beginning the Word (Jesus) already existed, he was with God and he was God, so the word became human and lived on earth among us. He is full of love and faithfulness.

What Jesus taught and what he did are tied inseparably to who he is.

The bible shows Jesus as fully human and fully God. Although Jesus took upon himself full humility and lived as a man, He never ceased to be the eternal God who has always existed.

This is the truth about Jesus and the foundation of all truth. If we cannot or do not believe in this basic truth, then we will not have enough faith to trust our eternal destiny to Him.

In John 1:14 it says, "The WORD became flesh and made his dwelling among us"

Jesus is God's only and unique Son, (the emphasis is on "Unique"). Jesus is one of a kind, and enjoys a special relationship with God.

He is unlike all other believers: he is the Son of God and we are the children of God. When Jesus was born, God became a man. He was not part man and part God; he was completely human and completely divine.

The two most common errors we make about Jesus are to:
  1. Minimize his humanity, and
  2. Minimize his divinity.
Jesus is both God and man.

To say, "The Word became flesh" means that Jesus became a human person. By doing so, he became:
  1. The perfect teacher. In Jesus' life we see how God thinks and, therefore, how we should think. ( Philippians 2:5-11 )
  2. The perfect example, as a model of what we are to be come. He shows us how to live, and gives us the power to live that way. ( 1 Peter 2:21 )
  3. The perfect sacrifice. Jesus came as a sacrifice for our sins. ( Colossians 1:15-23 )

Secondly, I want to focus on Isaiah chapter 53, verses 1 to 12 .

In verse 6 it says, "All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid upon Him the guilt and sins of us all".

In this chapter, Isaiah speaks of the Messiah, Jesus who would suffer for the sins of all people. Who would believe that God would choose to save the world through a humble servant, rather than a king?

This idea is contrary to human understanding and worldly ways. But God often works in ways we don't expect him to. The Messiah's strength is shown by HUMILITY, SUFFERING, MERCY and LOVE.
